I was born in New Zealand in a town called Tokoroa in 1962. New Zealand is perhaps most famous for sheep. (photo by Joshua) This is a picture of me with my mother. In 1986 I met a lovely young lady by the name of Etsuko Ono (a Graduate student of Junshin Junior College) while I was studying at Canterbury University (Christchurch). (2006 pic of Etsuko.. still young and beautiful ねー) We met because we both went to the same church, near the University (Illam Apostolic), she was a travel coordinator for Japanese tourists at that time. We got married in 1989 in the Baptist church (Isahaya, Nagasaki). Photo by Tajima - Photo Studio (Isahaya) Photo by Nishiyama - Photo Studio (Yokohama) (2001 photo of Aya) At the rear right are my wife's two older sisters, Masako and Ryoko. I also graduated from University the same year (Electrical Engineering). In 1993 we came to Japan to live (Isahaya), and had a son Joshua in 1994. The choice of the name "Joshua" was based on Joshua ch. 24 vs 14 and 15 (our prayer for all people of Japan). (2002 photo of Joshua)  I worked as an AET at the Seiryo Senior High School in Tarami (Nagasaki) for three years. The following picture was taken by my first supervisor Mr Nakamoto, he kindly took me and my lovely wife many places. (2004 photo with Wellington in the background) Unzen, New year's day 2009 (Unzen, new year's day 2009). Photo taken after Joshua's high school entrance ceremony (Mikawa Seido Boys school), March 2010 (photo taken at Nagasaki University). I have two younger sisters their names are Vivienne and Brenda. Vivienne married a German gentleman by the name of Thomas Wolff Dec. 2001, they met at a church in Wellington (The Rock). Photo by Stephen Procter They have 2 boys Zachariah and Oscar . My youngest sister Brenda married David Ingram-Johnson (Feb 2002), and have a girl Charlotte and boy Alexander.Photo by Steve Wilson The following photo is of my family (Feb. 2018) and my wife's family (Ryozo Ono 1924 - 2005) May 2013 photo . My extended grandparents were my mother's father (Grandpa 1915 - Dec. 4 2003) and my father's mother (Granny Apr. 9 1906 - Aug. 3 2003).

My life centers on Christianity and my hobbies include building (41 Woodman Drive Tawa Wellington New Zealand) designed and built in my early 20s (more recent photos ), boating from very slow to very fast, skiing (my kind of sign) , photography, multimedia, computing, electronics, mechatronics, mountain climbing , camping (2020) and of course love of animals. (~100kg dogs) (medium dog) (this is a cat). 2016 update, Joshua’s fiancé (Miyuki Kozan) and set of wheels for two (Mazda roadstar). Oct. 2016 Joshua started up a new company called "FUDO Co. Ltd" (Wind tunnel manufacture Japan Co. Ltd) 株式会社 日本風洞製作所 ( Nov. 26 2016 Nikkei Keizai Newspaper article 2016年11月26日、日本経済新聞の記事 ) Dec. 2016 Chojabaru, Mt. Aso 2017 update, Joshua's wheels (Chevrolet Corvette C5 , later C7 , very nice but practically challenged - 2 seater) and finally a more useful car (4 seater), R35 GTR (first edition.. but latest engine controller) (a little noisy and cramped in the back... but good acceleration ~560bhp.. attaining Japan's maximum speed limit off the race track in under 3 sec.. ) . Joshua and Miyuki were married in 2020 in the Nagasaki Baptist Church Joshua and Miyuki's wedding photo. On September 8 2022 Miyuki gave birth to Erica Esther Lawn Miyuki Erica Joshua Erica Erica Esther Lawn .

I currently hold a tenure-track position in the Nagasaki University Division of Mechanical Science (Graduate School), coordinate a Medical-Engineering hybrid professional development program (Eng. side) and am involved in education for the Organization for Marine Science and Technology. Formerly between 1999 to 2013 I taught IT and English at the Nagasaki Junshin Catholic University in the English IT department while working part time at Nagasaki University. I completed a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Nagasaki University in 2003. I worked as a technician and later engineer for the New Zealand Railways 1980-1990, then as a communications consultant for NZ Telecom 1990-1993. I was a lecturer at the Nagasaki Institute of Applied Science 1997-1999, continuing as a visiting lecturer until 2006. I received prefectural awards for innovation (stair-climbing wheelchair) in 1997 and 1998. Studies and interests include the development of various assistive devices in the field of rehabilitation, and use of multimedia in the feild of English Education. From 2012 my focus was and to some extent still is assisting my son Joshua in wind turbine and wind tunnel related research.

In regard to health, I have been very blessed. At age 14 (1976) I had a brain tumor, the medical folks did not think I would survive, but God graciously brought me back, I am very thankful for the people throughout NZ who kindly prayed for me at that time. In 2012 I had eye cancer and was treated with Heavy Iron Radiation at the QST hospital in Chiba. The tumor was at the top of my eye (the best possible place.. according to medics) and as I write I am thankful that I can still see with both eyes. More recently, in 2021, the eye cancer (melanoma) started to spread, and this spread has continued despite the most effective chemotherapy available at the time of writing (Opdivo and Yervoy). I am very thankful for friends and family around the world who continue to support me in so many ways, in particular to my lovely wife and our church (Nagasaki Baptist Church), and to the very patient medical staff at our local hospital for their care and treatment and for the folks in my workplace for their understanding and support. While I do not know what the future holds, I do know who holds the future (God). Am I scared? Yes, very, however, I simply pray that my life and death may bring honor to the name of Jesus and that my life may encourage at least one person to put their trust in God. Jesus was also terrified at the thought of suffering and dying, however, Jesus said “not my will, but your (God’s) will be done”. This is also my prayer. If I can be of any help, do contact me, or check out a church near you for support. Everyone is searching for purpose and meaning in life, this can only be found in knowing personally the creator of life, “God”. Before the time you were born, you were destined to read this, to know and serve God. It’s not about what “God can do for you”, it’s about knowing God’s will (mission) for you and doing it and it usually starts from where you are.
